The competitions won’t be limited by the strict rules that govern some official beer competitions. Caps will be tallied for first, second and third places,” says Brown. “All attendees will get three bottle caps to use to vote three times for the People’s Choice beverage. The second portion of the competition is the People’s Choice Award. As far as what gets picked, it’s up to the judges,” he smiles. “It’s a chance for the home brewer to see their recipe brewed commercially and served to the public, and the brewer will be involved on brewing day. The judges will then select one winning beer which will get brewed and served at the Ukiah Brewing Company at the later date. “They will be bringing in over 50 taps to compete in the People’s Choice Awards, with ribbons and prizes awarded to the winners.” Over 30 home brewers from Mendocino and surrounding counties will be participating in the event, according to Brown. Ukiah Brewing Company was also eager to get involved and became one of our first sponsors.” “VMC gave us a grant for our initial funding, and from there it snowballed. For whatever reason, I raised my hand and volunteered to be the event coordinator,” smiles Brown. The word went out to all us beer geeks, asking if anyone wanted to take this on. “Cynthia was working with Visit Mendocino County and they liked the idea, as did Scott Cratty at the Westside Renaissance Market. This year’s sponsors include: the Ukiah Brewing Company, the Mendocino County Mushroom, Wine and Beer Fest, Draft Punk, the Westside Renaissance Market, North Coast Brewing Company, Saucy Restaurant, Flow Kana, The Book Juggler, Riley’s Cab, Beer Belly Fermentation Supply, KZYX, KWINE, the MAXX and KOZT Radio Stations.Īccording to home brewer and event coordinator Matt Brown, the idea for a home brewer’s competition originated with Cynthia Ariosta from Saucy Restaurant. The festival has been designated an anchor event scheduled in conjunction with the 18th Annual Mendocino County Mushroom, Wine and Beer Festival. It takes place at the Ukiah Valley Conference Center from 2 to 6 p.m. 4, for what is hoped will become an annual event. The Mendocino County Homebrew Festival is coming to Ukiah on Saturday, Nov.
